The Colts today traded fullback Chris Gronkowski to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a cornerback, Cassius Vaughn. Vaughn is a 5-11, 195 pound corner entering his third season. He has appeared in 22 games and started 3, while making 22 tackles (18 solo), batting down 4 passes and picking off one, which he returned for a touchdown last season. Vaughn has also averaged 37.2 yards per return in 9 career returns and scored one touchdown.
Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said of Vaughn: “When you turn on the film you instantly recognize his athletic ability and speed”. He ran a 4.3 40 yard dash at his pro day in 2010.
Vaughn provides depth to the position that lacks it most on the Colts roster. The starters at this point would still be Jerraud Powers and Chris Rucker, but Vaughn will likely see some good minutes and give good depth. The move is a low risk deal, and I think that adding a corner was a wise choice. The question is whether they have someone else in mind for fullback. Meanwhile, the Broncos’ additon of a fullback indicates that their offense will not totally be Peyton Manning’s offense, as for years the Colts did not even carry a fullback. That is certainly something to keep an eye on.
Also today, the Colts signed Arena Football League veteran outside linebacker Jerry Brown and released outside linebacker Brandon Peguese. Brown (6-4, 253 pounds) played for the San Antonio Talons of the AFL. Peguese signed with the Colts on February 13, 2012 after he spent 2011 with the Philadelphia Eagles, who signed him as an undrafted free agent before the 2011 season.
