Anthony Gonzalez Signs with the New England Patriots

The New England Patriots today signed free agent wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, who spent his first 5 years in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts.  Gonzo, as he is called, was the first round selection of the Colts in the 2007 NFL Draft, when they picked 32nd and were the defending super bowl champions.  The plan was for Gonzo to eventually replace Marvin Harrison, and for his first two seasons, Gonzo was a very good slot receiver.

Then, injuries derailed Gonzo’s career.  He was hardly a factor at all for much of the past 3 years.  Colts fans grew sick of him.

Gonzo is a good guy, and I am glad that he got another chance.  If he can stay healthy, he can be a very good player for the Patriots.

I was actually hoping the Colts would give him a one year deal and add some wide receiver depth, but would you rather catch passes from Tom Brady or Andrew Luck?  And did the Colts even want him?  I don’t know.

Regardless, I’m glad for Gonzo, and I hope he stays healthy in New England.

And you know, he probably will.
