Please Do Not Blame Jim Irsay, Colts Fans

This is written to Colts fans everywhere.  Please read this.

Today has been one of the roughest days of my life.  Peyton Manning, the guy whom I watched for 14 years, is gone.  He did so much for this city, and will continue to do so.  Manning said this afternoon that:

I’m not leaving Indianapolis. I just won’t be with the Colts. This city’s been so great to me and it’s still a big part of my life. It’s a departure from the Colts, but certainly not from the great city of Indianapolis.

The wide consensus among Colts fans has been to hate Jim Irsay.  Please don’t.

There is no bigger Peyton Manning fan than me.  But I also know that I am a Colts fan first, and so I must stand up for my team’s owner as well.  Jim Irsay really had no other choice, did he?  I mean, seriously, the same fans that were so heavily in the “Suck For Luck” campaign now suddenly would rather have Peyton?

Irsay cannot pass up on Andrew Luck, and he knows that it is best for Peyton Manning to go elsewhere.  He said as much today, when he noted that “we’re rebuilding, we’re definitely a few years away”.

It is not Irsay’s fault that Peyton Manning’s neck was injured.  It is not Irsay’s fault that the Colts played Curtis Painter so long to be in a position for Luck.  But it certainly would be Irsay’s fault if he passed on Luck, and he cannot do that .

As difficult as it is to accept right now, Jim Irsay did what he had to.  He was hurting badly too.  It was not just Peyton fighting back tears today, it was Irsay as well.  He never wanted to have to part ways with Peyton Manning.

But in the NFL, sometimes it has to happen.  Said Manning:

But I guess in life and in sports, we all know that nothing lasts forever.  Times change, circumstances change, and that’s the reality of playing in the NFL.

Colts fans, please do not blame Jim Irsay.  He does not deserve it.  He is one of the best owners in the league, and he is making a decision that he feels is best for his franchise.

It is just hard for us Colts fans to see the same way right now.

  1. #Reality says:

and what about all the other players released on friday that we have no replacements for? with the redskins trading their draft picks to move up to the no. 2 spot in the draft, whats to say the colts couldnt have kept manning and did the same and addressed some other needs for the team? Jim Irsay IS to blame and you can think all you want that he isnt but it is clear now that he has made some unforgiving mistakes by disassembling a team that 2 years ago was in the playoffs and 3 years ago in a superbowl. You say one of the greatest owners in the NFL, I say one of the biggest idiots in the NFL!

    • Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, and yours seems to be the opinion of a lot of Colts fans. However, this had to happen. If it really is a rebuilding year, they cannot keep holding on to the glory days. As painful as it is to see these guys go, it had to happen. I commend Irsay for making the incredibly tough decisions to the good of his franchise, despite personal attachment. That to me is a good owner.
