Colts fire Jim Caldwell

The Indianapolis Colts fired head coach Jim Caldwell today. Caldwell took over the team following Tony Dungy’s retirement after the 2008 season, and he took the Colts to the super bowl in his first year. Caldwell’s record overall was 26-22. His 3 years in Indianapolis started with a 14-2 year, and ended with a 2-14 year. Jim Irsay and Ryan Grigson will have a press conference at 4 p.m.
Jim Caldwell is a great guy, and everyone with the Colts really liked him. I liked him as well. But, the Colts needed a change. Caldwell is just not a head coach. That is no knock on him, most people are not head coaches. I truly wish Coach Caldwell the best.
Numerous reports in the last few days said the Colts were going to retain Caldwell. My opinion, along with many other peoples, is that new GM Ryan Grigson was performing a “leak test” to find out where the leaks in the organization are and how many. And it seems like a lot. Regardless, that was played nicely by Grigson if he really was just testing the organization.
And what about Peyton Manning? I’m sticking with my original opinion that if Peyton Manning is healthy, he will be a Colt. But this firing shows that Manning does not have much say in the organization at all. Grigson hadn’t talked to Manning at the time of his introduction. Manning liked Caldwell alot, and he hates change. And Caldwell was fired anyways. I still think the Colts keep Peyton, but it does have questions swirling in my head.
And who to replace Caldwell? My early guess is Steve Spagnulo. He actually was in Indy yesterday interviewing for the defensive coordinator position. Coincidence? I’m not sure… Other names I’ve heard being thrown out include Bruce Arians and Marty Mornhinweg. I say NO to Mornhinweg (partly because I can’t spell his name).
Colts fans, this offseason just got crazier.
They will have a new coach in 2012 as well.
